The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus tells the story of the titular Doctor and his travelling 'Imaginarium' where audience members get the chance to choose between light and joy, or darkness and gloom. Doctor parnassus long ago made a bet with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on the grounds that when his first born reached its 16th year, he or she would become the property of the devil. Dr Parnassus' daughter Valentina is now approaching her 16th birthday and he is desperate to protect her from the imminant handover. The devil arrives but, as a betting man, makes another wager. Now, in order to win Valentina, the victor must be the first to seduce five souls. Joined by many wild and eccentric characters in his journey, Dr Parnassus promises his daughter's hand in marriage to the man that helps him win.
This new Terry Gilliam flick will be notable for being the last film Heath Ledger worked on, his role in the film being unfinished before his untimely death. As the story is centered on a 1,000 year old magician with a magic mirror that serves as a portal, the film was saved by Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell all playing versions of the same character portrayed by Ledger, changing as they pass through the mirror.

"Christopher Plummer" is Dr. Parnassus who is an immortal that made one to many deals with the Devil whom is acted very well by "Tom Waits". The last deal Dr. Parnassus made a with the Devil could lose him his beautiful daughter Valentina at the age of 16 who is well acted by "Lily Cole". "Heath Ledger" stars as Tony and it was very sad that he passed away before completing this film. The director Terry Gilliam was able to overcome Heath Ledgers tragic death by making Tony turn into different actors each time he went into the Imaginarium mirror. The three lucky actors that become Tony are "Johnny Depp", "Jude Law" and "Colin Farrell". All the actors together really make this film shine. The fantasy world which Terry Gilliam creates is simply amazing and his directing skills are all on top form for this movie. For me The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is up there with the "Time Bandits", "Twelve Monkeys", "The Fisher King" and "Brazil" as one of Terry Gilliam's all time best films.
this is without doubt one of the most imaginative films of recent times.
telling the tale of an immortal-- 'doctor parnassus' who owns a travelling side show which creates the imagination of the doctor, beyond the mirror, giving choices of destiny.
when they find 'tony' hanging from a london bridge 'alive' his presence is about to change the fortunes of the out-dated side-show....but will it be for the better ?
however to add to the confusion, the good doctor can't resist a bet, trouble is, he's long since sold his sole to 'nick'
i'm not gonna spoil this for you, it's a fasinating tale, that will take you on an unusual journey.
of course this film is 'heath ledger's' last part, his character is continued through the film by an impressive cast-list.
how do you score a film like this ? what i do know is will bw enjoyed by most who see it, from young through to not so young, so i've given it '5' because it is really 'entertaining' ...........enjoy.
If you like films that have fantasy & reality mixed in them, then is for you. If you like films Pan's Labyrinth, some of David Lynch's or Gilliam's other work, you will love this. If you read books for fun, (apart from Harry Potter or Dan Brown ones) you'll like this. If you like plots that you have to actually watch to understand, beautiful imagery & the idea of Tom Waits as the Devil, then watch this.
If you like films with explosions every 5 seconds & car chases, you probably won't. If you get distracted by a fly going through your field of vision or have A.D.D.you probably won't. If you found the first Matrix film difficult to follow, stick to the latest Steven Seagal or Jean-Claude Van Damme kick fest or get back to watch Eastenders or Hollyoaks. I despair.
